Western Washington University

WWU is one of five public universities in Washington. The 195-acre campus is a cultural resource for the entire community, with numerous concerts, art exhibits, plays and lecture open to the public throughout the year, including distinguished guest performers and experts as well as resident faculty and students.

The campus, on a hillside facing the Bellingham Bay, contains 73 buildings. The university now attracts more than 12,000 full and part-time students, about 93% of whom are state residents.

WWU employs the equivalent of 615 full-time instructors, including 456 full-time faculty members.

WWU has been ranked second among public regional universities in the West, according to a survey in News and World Report.

Bellingham Technical College

The technical college is a public, post-high school institution that offers associate in applied science degrees in 18 occupational programs, as well as certificates in 29 more.

BTC also offers continuing education courses, basic academic skills courses, and courses in English as a second language. Total student registration is more the 3,600.

Whatcom Community College

Whatcom Community College is a public two-year school serving about 5,000 full and part-time students per quarter. WCC offers associate degrees in academic, technical, and professional areas, as well as opportunities to complete high school. Most students plan to transfer to a four-year school for a bachelor degree, after completion of associate degree requirements at WCC.

St. Joe’s is Bellingham’s hospital. It is a 253-bed, 2 campus medical center and a Level II Trauma Center as well. Currently, St Joe’s staff includes 300 physicals, 250 volunteers, and 1600 employees including more than 450 nurses. Almost 2000 babies are born every year in 18 large new labor-delivery-recovery suites.

Whatcom County homeowners pay an annual property tax bill - payable in two installments - that supports state and county government, a local school district, a countywide port district, and state school funds.
